The ADS1115 is an external 16-bit ADC + a built-in programmable gain amplifier (or PGA), which can be very useful for certain Arduino and ESP8266 projects. This is ideal when more resolution or more analogue pins are required. You get better accuracy, as well as relieving the processor of this burden.

The ADS1115 is a 16-bit ADC to Analog Digital Converter that can be very useful for certain projects with Arduino and ESP8266.

Although Arduino boards usually have a built-in ADC to digital analog converter, the ADS1115 has more features and more resolution.

For example, the Arduino UNO incorporates 6 10-bit ADCs however the ADS1115 has a 16-bit resolution. On the other hand, by using an external ADC, you will free up the processor. In the case of the ESP8266, it only incorporates a 10-bit analog-digital converter that measures in the range of 0V and 1V. This makes the conversion dependent on the resistors that are used to make the voltage divider.

Using the ADS1115 you will gain a lot in precision and conversion quality.

The communication between the external ADS1115 digital analog converter and Arduino or ESP8266 is through I2C.

It also has a comparator mode in which the ADS1115 generates an alert through the ALERT pin when any of the channels exceeds a threshold value that we set by code.

Finally, the ADS1115 incorporates a PGA that allows to adjust the gain from 6.144V to 0.256V. This allows to obtain higher accuracies when we measure voltages lower than 5V.

Regardless of the PGA chosen, the maximum voltage that we can measure will always be the supply voltage. That is, although the PGA is 6.144V, we cannot measure voltages higher than 5V.

Mounting

The ADDR pin determines the I2C address of the device, according to the following table. The default mode is to connect the ADDR pin to GND, which results in address 0x48.
