One of the first problems we encounter in the process of designing and adjusting a machine that uses stepper motors, is the selection of a suitable motor and driver and its subsequent electrical calibration. This is an important task that, however, is often performed incorrectly. A consequence of a bad choice is the loss of steps in the different axes of the machine, due to lack of force, heating of the electronics or other reasons. Why use stepper motors
Stepper motors have plenty of advantages that make them perfect for use in 3D printers and CNC machines. To begin with, they allow for control of the position - thanks to the controler, we are able to precisely define the position of the rotor we want to get to and the angle the rotor is going to be at at the end of the cycle. Additionally, in the same manner we can control the speed of the motor (thanks to speed controller this time). Another aspect of stepper motors is ability to stay fixed in one position, which enables applications such as holding a robotic arm in one position or keep the door open. Last but not least, stepper motors are very powerful at low speeds. For the specific power of each motor, check the detailed description, but we have a range from 1.22 kg/cm up to 28.5 kg/cm.
Key parameters when you choose your step by step motor
First of all there are two big types of stepper motors - unipolars and bipolares. In essence, unipolars are easier to program while bipolars are cheaper, however require more complex drivers (driver has to control not only the coil to which it sends power but as well how it should magnetize as the coils can change the polars). Other key characteristics of stepper motors include number of steps per cycle and angle per step (standard is respectively 200 and 1.8 degree). Finally, there are dimensions of the motors and these are defined by a unified standard that is NEMA (National Electrical Manufacturers Association) - in our offer we have NEMA 17s and NEMA 23s, which pretty much mean the size of the front of the motor (17 is 1.7 inch on 1.7 inch, 23 2.3 inch on 2.3 inch).
To work at all stepper motors require a driver. For unipolars the most frequent driver is ULN2803 very easy in its function but satisfying all unipolar unsophisticated needs. With bipolars situation is a bit more complex as the motor itself - the drivers here can control power, microsteps and are usually the ones that are used in the 3D printers.
