Raspberry Pi cameras

Raspberry cameras are the essential element of the whole ecosystem. Raspberry Foundation itself produces their official cameras based on Sony modules that assure the highest quality and full set of solutions as guided by the producer together with complete compatibility and hence the easiest setup. Taking into consideration Raspberry is able to process basic machine learning programs with Python, with camera at hand you can try to run basic image recognition applications. Obviously there are other cameras on the market, Arduino modules as well are often cross-platform, however might take some more time and effort to set-up. Check our offering and find what you need! In principle, the newest boards should be fully backward compatible, i.e. work well with elder cameras as well. Nonetheless check information on compatibility at each camera and consult us if you have any further doubts.

Official Raspberry Pi cameras

Raspberry has released so far two official modules of cameras - the first one early on with the release of first boards and the second revision in 2016. The second version brought an upgrade from OmniVision OV5647 sensor (resolution of 5Mpix) up to Sony IMX219 (resolution of 8Mpix). Both of them come in two versions - day light and night (with no Infrared filter). Raspberry cameras have full compatibility, so you don´t have to worry whether your board will support it no matter whether you have a Raspberry 1 or 4.

Raspberry cameras applications

You can use your camera for whatever you might imagine. With their specs, there is little they cannot do. Nonetheless, people mostly use them for botanic ends - monitoring health of the plants, observing wildlife and some basic image recognition solutions. Consult a wide array of libraries available on the official Raspberry page and tutorials to find the most interesting applications of those little powerful cameras!

Other cameras compatible with Raspberry

Obviously, there is a range of cameras from other producers available on the market including no-name solutions, WaveShare and many others. The benefit of some of the cameras with GPIO connection is that they work cross-platform (you can use them with any module, be that Arduino, Raspberry or any other), however they might take more time and heavy lifting in terms of configuration and customizing libraries.
