Natural gas, which is used, for example, in gas cookers, is a colourless and hardly perceptible gas. It is lighter than air and therefore accumulates in the upper parts of rooms. When combined with oxygen, it forms a highly explosive mixture. Propane-butane gas (LPG) is heavier than air and, like natural gas, forms an explosive mixture with oxygen. Installing gas detectors in rooms where there may be a gas leak is one way of detecting the risk of a gas explosion at an early stage. Make sure that the detector is correctly mounted at a distance of 1.5 to 4 metres from the gas source and at the correct height from the ceiling or floor.
