What is the mmWave radar sensor?

Millimetre-wave radar technology is a non-contact sensing technology for detecting objects and providing the range, speed and angle of those objects (in our case, humans). The mmWave sensors transmit signals with a wavelength in the high frequency spectrum between 24GHz and 300GHz, also called millimetre range (mm).

a bit of theory ...

This 24 GHz millimetre-wave radar sensor employs FMCW and CW multimode modulation and a separate transmitting and receiving antenna structure.

In operation, the sensor first emits FMCW and CW radio waves into the detection area. The sensor system's millimetre-wave MMIC circuitry then converts the radio waves reflected by all moving, micromotion or extremely weakly moving targets in the area into electrical signals. These signals are then sent to the processor and processed by the corresponding signal and data algorithms. The target information can then be resolved.

The millimetre-wave radar sensor has the functions of human presence, human stillness and human motion sensing. Compared with the digital infrared motion sensor, millimetre-wave radar has a higher accuracy for human detection in stationary states such as sleeping and sitting people, but the response speed of millimetre-wave radar is 2-4 seconds. If the response speed and accuracy requirements are higher, the millimetre-wave radar and the digital infrared motion sensor can be used together. In addition, light and temperature sensors can be added to control lights, air conditioning and other furniture.

The detection results of the millimetre wave radar can be output through the serial port or I/O port, and the sensor module has the characteristics of high detection reliability, high sensitivity, small size, easy to use and easy to integrate.
